APPROVALS ASSISTANT

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists with coordination of merchandise approvals. Provides overall support to the Approvals Team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  1. Performs general administrative duties to support the Approvals team including: copying, shipping and receiving, general organization, etc.
  2. Coordinates the creation and development of international style guides using language and graphic design skills, background, and knowledge.
  3. Reviews and approves/disapproves proposed prototype merchandise, and acts as liaison with international licensees. Prepares notes and instructions for workers who assemble and prepare final layouts for printing. Reviews final layout and suggests improvements as needed. Utilizing fine arts background, modifies original material while preserving original concepts.
  4. Facilitates approval process in a timely manner.
  5. Studies illustrations and photographs for use in creating presentation of material/products. Uses fine arts/design skills to occasionally prepare illustrations/sketches of material based on specifications of client or supervisor. May be required to assist with storyboard drawings for development of television productions.
  6. Designs art/copy layouts for visual media presentations including packaging, books, magazines, newspapers, and television appearances. References fine arts/design skills to make all scopes of aesthetic choices, including font, size, style, and illustration. Utilizes knowledge of layout concepts to determine overall layout arrangement.
  7. Occasionally prepares final layouts for submission to printer, including basic layout assembly.
  8. Localizes original contents using strong bilingual skills.
  9. Researches and studies new design concepts to stay abreast of developments and new techniques.
  10. Maintains thorough knowledge of original merchandise concepts and designs utilizing various content materials.
  11. Compiles and produces merchandise concepts and materials.
  12. Photographs product samples and organizes photo files. Uses camera to create layout prints at the request of supervisors or clients. Responsible for maintaining inventory of photo work, artwork, designs and film. Maintains archive files and sample files. Creates and updates database for easy reference of art and layout archive.
  13. Tracks, collates, and maintains inventory of product samples.

    In addition to these typical responsibilities, the Approvals Assistant may perform other duties as necessary.

MINIMUM ABILITY, SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Japanese fluency a MUST
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Basic design skills/familiarity with design programs A MUST
  • Self starter, able to work independently
  • Superior writing skills
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong team and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Japanese business practices and culture a plus
  • Ability to commute to/from the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Legal right to work in United States

MINIMUM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:
  • 1 - 2 years of business experience a MUST
  • Design/Production Artist experience a MUST
  • Entertainment licensing experience a PLUS
  • International business experience a PLUS

MINIMUM EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Equivalent of Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Art, or related fields from an accredited college or university, or equivalent, with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not supervise anyone directly, but does gives guidance to other members of staff.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Primarily works in an office environment. Approximately 75% of time spent on the job involves use of a video display terminal; therefore, must be able to sit for extended periods and to utilize standard ergonomics practices. Must be able to travel periodically.

OTHER INFORMATION:
Employees must adhere to all applicable ShoPro policies and procedures. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Willingness and ability to work non-standard business hours, such as nights, on an as-needed basis, is required. Employees must be able to cope effectively with deadlines and multiple demands.
